Sore, tender, and sensitive breasts, often one of the earliest pregnancy signs.
Medically reviewed by healthcare professionals | Last reviewed: March 2026
📅 When It Occurs
Begins very early, around 4-6 weeks, peaks first trimester
📊 How Common
One of the most common early symptoms, affects 75-80% of women
Overview
Breast tenderness is often one of the first signs of pregnancy, sometimes even before a missed period. Your breasts may feel sore, heavy, and extremely sensitive to touch - even wearing a bra or sleeping on your stomach can be uncomfortable.
Pregnancy hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, cause your breasts to prepare for milk production. Blood flow to the breasts increases, and milk ducts begin to expand. All this activity causes swelling, sensitivity, and discomfort.
For most women, breast tenderness improves after the first trimester as hormones level off, though breasts continue to grow throughout pregnancy. By the third trimester, your breasts are preparing for breastfeeding.
