Itchy Skin

Skin itchiness, especially on stretching belly, due to hormones and skin expansion.

Medically reviewed by healthcare professionals | Last reviewed: March 2026

📅 When It Occurs

Common throughout pregnancy, especially as belly grows

📊 How Common

About 20% of pregnant women experience significant itching

Overview

Itchy skin affects about 20% of pregnant women and is usually a normal, if annoying, pregnancy symptom. As your belly, breasts, and thighs expand to accommodate your growing baby, the skin stretches and can become dry and itchy.

Pregnancy hormones can also increase skin sensitivity and reduce the skin's ability to retain moisture, contributing to itchiness. The increased blood flow to the skin can make you feel warmer and more prone to itching.

While most itching is harmless, severe itching - especially on hands and feet without a rash - can indicate cholestasis of pregnancy, a liver condition requiring medical attention.
