📅 When It Occurs

Can occur throughout pregnancy, common in first and second trimesters

📊 How Common

Affects 40-60% of pregnant women

Overview

Dizziness during pregnancy can range from mild lightheadedness when standing up to feeling like you might faint. It's caused by your cardiovascular system working hard to adapt to increased demands.

Your blood pressure typically drops during pregnancy, especially in the first and second trimesters, which can cause that woozy feeling. Additionally, your blood vessels are expanding and your body is working to circulate 50% more blood than normal.

While usually harmless, severe or frequent dizziness should be discussed with your doctor, as it can sometimes indicate anemia, dehydration, or other issues requiring attention.

📆 By Trimester

First Trimester

Common due to blood pressure changes and morning sickness

Second Trimester

Continues as blood volume increases

Third Trimester

May worsen due to uterus compressing blood vessels

🔍 What Causes It?

  • Lower blood pressure as blood vessels relax and dilate
  • Blood pooling in legs when standing
  • Growing uterus compressing blood vessels
  • Low blood sugar from irregular eating
  • Anemia (low iron levels)
  • Dehydration
  • Standing up too quickly (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Lying flat on back in late pregnancy (supine hypotensive syndrome)
  • Overheating or stuffy environments

💡 Relief Strategies

  • Stand up slowly - sit at edge of bed for a moment before standing
  • Avoid lying flat on your back after first trimester - lie on left side
  • Eat small, frequent meals to maintain stable blood sugar
  • Stay well-hydrated - drink 8-10 glasses of water daily
  • Avoid standing for long periods - move around or sit when needed
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Avoid hot, stuffy environments
  • If dizzy, sit or lie down immediately
  • Lie on left side if feeling faint
  • Eat iron-rich foods or take iron supplements if recommended
  • Take prenatal vitamins regularly
  • Avoid skipping meals
