Muscle Development & Strength

Muscles form and strengthen throughout pregnancy, enabling movement and preparing for life outside the womb.

📅

Development Timeline

Weeks 8-40 and beyond

Overview

Your baby's muscles begin forming in the first trimester and gradually strengthen throughout pregnancy. Early muscle development is essential for movement, and movement is essential for continued muscle and bone development - they work together.

Different muscle groups develop at different rates. Facial muscles develop early, allowing baby to make expressions and practice sucking. Limb muscles strengthen progressively, leading to those kicks and jabs you feel.

By the third trimester, baby has significant muscle strength, which you definitely feel! Muscle development continues after birth, with major gains in the first year as baby learns to control movements, sit, crawl, and walk.

🗓️ Week-by-Week Milestones

Week 12

Facial muscles developing

Week 16

Muscles strengthening, movements more coordinated

Week 20

You begin feeling muscle movements

Week 24

Muscles practicing breathing movements

Week 28

Strong enough to change positions

Week 36

Muscle tone well-developed for birth

👀 What to Expect

💡 Tips for Parents

  • Those kicks you feel are baby strengthening muscles
  • Movement is essential for muscle development
  • Decreased movement may indicate a problem
