Fingernail & Toenail Development
Nails form gradually, with fingernails growing faster than toenails throughout pregnancy.
Development Timeline
Weeks 10-40
Overview
Your baby's fingernails and toenails begin forming around week 10, starting as small nail beds. The nails gradually grow throughout pregnancy, with fingernails reaching fingertips by week 32 and toenails by week 36.
Babies are born with soft, thin nails that can be surprisingly sharp. Many newborns have scratches on their faces from their own nails! The nails continue hardening after birth.
Post-term babies may have long nails that need trimming right away. Nail development is one way to assess gestational age - longer nails suggest a more mature baby.
