Facial Features Development
Baby's unique facial features form gradually, from basic structures to recognizable face.
Development Timeline
Weeks 4-40
Overview
Your baby's facial features develop from separate structures that gradually migrate and fuse together. What starts as basic tissue folds transforms into the unique face your baby will have at birth.
By week 8, basic facial features are present though the face looks quite alien. The eyes start on the sides of the head and gradually move forward. The nose, lips, and ears develop from small buds and fuse together.
By the second trimester, baby's face looks more human. The third trimester is about fat deposition creating those adorable chubby cheeks and refinement of features. Your baby's unique face is already determined by genetics.
