Coordination & Motor Skills Development
Baby's movements become more coordinated and purposeful as brain and muscles develop together.
Development Timeline
Weeks 8-40 and postpartum
Overview
Coordination develops gradually as your baby's brain and muscles mature together. Early movements are random and reflexive. By the second trimester, movements become more purposeful - baby can bring hands to mouth, grasp umbilical cord, and respond to stimuli.
The cerebellum, which controls coordination, grows rapidly in the third trimester. This allows increasingly complex movements - somersaults, stretching, and precise hand movements. You can feel these coordinated movements as rolls, kicks, and jabs.
After birth, coordination continues developing as baby learns to control movements, reach for objects, sit, crawl, and eventually walk. The foundation for all these skills is laid in the womb.
